NDA proves its worth!! Groundbreaking win at Bihar!

Bihar election results declared!! NDA has won by a huge margin of 206 on a total of 243 seats in Bihar.

The break-up is as follows:

  1. NDA
    • JDU – 114
    • BJP – 91
  2. RJD – 22
  3. LJP – 3
  4. Congress – 5
  5. Others – 6

The results speak for itself!! People have voted for development and not political dynasties. To all my Bihari friends, congratulations on getting a pro-development CM like Nithish Kumar. The state in Karnataka is getting worse by each passing day. The government is corrupt, infamous, fighting for the chair, not development and finally, does not have a face. Recently, Yeddyurappa received bashings from the Central leadership over the crisis going on here.. Hope the situation improves…

P ≠ NP?

This is a question that has not been solved for more than 39 years! It was first posed by Stephen Cook. What is P and what is this NP?? P means that a particular problem can be solved in Polynomial time. NP means that it executes in Nondeterministic polynomial time. What does it all mean??  Why is the Clay Mathematics Institute giving away a million dollars to one who solves this problem?? And what is the relation between this to an Indian who made a lot of news recently?? In this post, I explain the history of this problem, the background of intractability and finally the details of the Indian from HP Labs, Vinay Deolikar’s solution.

Let me illustrate it with a small example…

Consider the subset sum problem in a simple way: You have a collection of billiards balls (15 numbered balls). Someone asks you to pick up balls which add up to 10. Quite simple right? Many solutions exist (10, 1+9, 2+8, 1+2+3+4,etc.) Suppose all even numbers are negative. Then? yes, solutions exist. (7+5-2, 1+3+5+7-6, etc.) But it took more time to answer than the previous one right? This is exactly the problem above. If you can solve it quickly, it can execute in polynomial time. If it cannot, it’s called non-deterministic polynomial. The subset sum problem belongs to the class of NP (quickly checkable) and not necessarily in P (quickly solvable). As the number of balls increases, it cannot provide all of the solutions in any reasonable time.

The relation between the complexity classes P and NP is studied in computational complexity theory, the part of the theory of computation dealing with the resources required during computation to solve a given problem. The most common resources are time (how many steps it takes to solve a problem) and space (how much memory it takes to solve a problem).

In such analysis, a model of the computer for which time must be analyzed is required. Typically such models assume that the computer is deterministic (given the computer’s present state and any inputs, there is only one possible action that the computer might take) and sequential (it performs actions one after the other).

In this theory, the class P consists of all those decision problems (defined below) that can be solved on a deterministic sequential machine in an amount of time that is polynomial in the size of the input; the class NP consists of all those decision problems whose positive solutions can be verified in polynomial time given the right information, or equivalently, whose solution can be found in polynomial time on a non-deterministic machine. Clearly, P ⊆ NP. Arguably the biggest open question in theoretical computer science concerns the relationship between those two classes:

Is P equal to NP?

It is almost impossible to answer the question as it tests the very fundamentals of our assumptions and axioms. To prove that P=NP, one introduces a class called NP Complete which essentially means that the problem can be checked to be NP in polynomial time and that it is in the set NP-hard

Without a mathematical proof, it’s almost impossible to believe anything.

An Indian by name, Vinay Deolikar of HP Labs claim

ed that he had proved that infact P ≠ NP.

It was described as a serious attempt by Markoff and Johnson, 2 leading teachers on computational theory.

The article was then peer-reviewed by the academicians all over the world. \

It was then found to have some irreparable flaws and many concrete errors.

If it had been accepted, it would have created a  revolution in the computer industry.

So, we are back to square one again. :D

News article about me in the Deccan Herald!!!

A news article about me and my company appeared in Deccan Herald. It was really a surprise. Am completely thankful to Manish for the post. Humbled :)

Completely busy day with final year project and other stuff :) Finally decided to update my blog today.

9 months of pregnancy ended.

The company is finally delvered to the public :) Idea was conceived in March when Arjun had asked me about the website design. It was nurtured by me reading about the various technologies involved. It was gestated for about a couple months and broke out of its cucoon when we were told to start our own ventures in August by our MED faculty, Sanjeev. Then it became a caterpiller vying for clients and food. Onyx was just the pedastal for me to launch TripleW officially early this month. Finally today my baby, my brain child, TripleW Inc has been delivered to the public! Thanks to all those who made it a success, my dad especially who encouraged me at every stage!!

Need to nourish it, develop and make it strong, powerful and intellectually capable! And this can’t be done without the help of all those who have supported me till now, and those who are going to support me later :) Wish me luck…

Yours,
Srikanth

November 2010 – Till Yesterday :)

November 14th – 18th: One of the most busiest days in my life. Never been so much busy in life! Ever!! Final year Projects, Projects of my own, Company websites, meeting up with clients, analysing potential businesses, etc!! Tested my limits, and pushed them too!!

November 19th: Got a call from Deccan Herald’s Manish who interviewed about me, my company, etc. I thought he was interviewing on his  own interest and gave all the required details, but to my surprise………

October 2010 – arISE fest

Towards the beginning, TripleW Inc gained attention. arISE fest was postponed by 3 days.

Got to ride a KAWASAKI NINJA, my uncle had brought it along from Anantapur to Mysore. Amazing bike – clocked 180kmph in just 5 minutes of driving on the college road!

arISE fest occured on 8th, 9th and 10th October. It was a resounding success! Had over 12 sponsors sponsoring Rs. 50,000/- for the first time. More than 500 participants in the fest. Conducted my own event – smsziuq  an SMS based quiz competition. Won Internet Quiz I place. :P Was the star for the 3 days along with Ankit and Vishal :)

After all the celebrations over, once again fell into the drudgery of classes. Normal engineering classes. Nothing more. A wealth of friend requests on facebook.

October 23rd: Participated in IEEE programming contest with Sanath Kumar

October 26th: Received invite to participate in 3-day workshop to be conducted at Bangalore by NEN “Tools for Growth”

October 28th: Meeting with Project team over feasibility of project. Was not found to be feasible as all team members were depending on me. Hence topic was to be changed.

October 29th: Prize distribution and Technical Paper Presentation conducted as final concluding day of arISE 2010. Project changed to “Workflow Management Systems” with the help of Lalgudi. Was off to Bangalore by evening.

October 30th, 31st and November 1st: Excellent workshop at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering. Learnt a lot! “Tools for growth” was excellent!

September 2010

College and fest work intensified. Prepared the ISE fest brochure – arISE 2010, “A new beginning”. Scouting for sponsorship at each and every stop. On the other hand, the college was pressurising and got scoldings for poor performance in review of project.

Onyx website launched.

Was named the IBM Campus Ambassador.

A busy month without rest. Worked for the fest as it was scheduled on 4th, 5th, 6th October.

August 2010 – Beginning of the End

The final year at NIE started… expected it to be fun. And the month of August sure turned out to be a month of surprises. College started with a bang – a rush to submit our project synopsis (based on compilers) by August 15th.

An idea of an ISE branch fest was conceived. Amazingly Vishal, Ankit and me were made the student co-ordinators for the fest.

August 14th: My brother Ramanujam’s Birthday was celebrated modestly at home.

August 15th: TripleW Inc launched!

August 19th, 20th and 21st: A trip to  Kerala with cousins. Amazed with Kerala. Was mesmerised with its beauty.

I started developing the Onyx website and it was complete by this month. Some more changes were pending.

August 23rd: Vishal, me and friends had been on a chota trip to KRS backwaters.. and it was like releasing pressure off a pressure cooker. The place which was calm and serene.

August 25th: Vishal’s birthday was celebrated at Ramanujam’s house in a grand manner. Enjoyed a lot again. :)

August 27th: A PPT on science and research at Vidya Vardhaka with Ramanujam. Many enquired about the project work. Felt special :)

August 29th: Off to Bangalore. GINI Launch event. IEEE’s. Met up with a lot of ppl. Enjoyed a lot again. Next day was Cisco placements. Returned home at 10pm

August 30th: The D-DAY. CISCO PLACED!! Another feather in my cap. Was the happiest person in the world! Partly amused, shocked and partly wanted to party! Was stuck up in rain before attending my interview, but finally was back with the help of my dad. Luck favours the brave! A happy ending to one of the most eventful months, again! Vishal’s overnight dream of me getting placed came true in the end :)

July 2010 Jolly, calm and serious

July kickstarted with a quick visit to Chamundi Hills and a chat at Big Bazar on July 1st with Vishal. A good beginning before entering the final year.

Project meeting was convened by the HOD and the project team was decided: Abhishek, Ankit, Vishal and myself.

Schnieder company was supposed to recruit during this month, but it was postponed. No worries :)

July 13th: A trip was arranged as thanksgiving to Sourabh and Vikas sir. Had loads of fun visiting Nimishamba, Kari ghatta, met up with an interesting kid there and Chandravana. Most memorable visit with Vikas sir. Sourabh was not free that day. Missed him. Not a lot of activities after that.. was just passing time and reading up somethings related to websites and stuff.

June 2010 joy at the end of it!

An internship offer had come in from National Instruments for 2 months. But didn’t take up the offer as our new house was in finishing stages and I had to be available to help my dad as much as possible. Exams approached rapidly and was seriously preparing for it. Finally exams got over and all was well.

June 16th the exams were over. June 18th was off to Bangalore with a coding genius Vishwas Sharma for a programming contest by RV College of Engineering. The fun thing was, at the end of the journey we found out that the entire contest was bogus and it was a waste of time coming there. So, I planned up a tour of Bangalore with my friends and cousins and had a tryst with Forum

Finally, the results came out. A perfect 10 CGPA. Joyful ending to an insightful, meaningful and enjoyable semester at NIE.

June 24th: My house Gruhapravesham. Was a grand function with more than 200 relatives and friends at our house. Enjoyed the day thoroughly and busy for the rest of the week in arranging and shifting the old house.

May 2010 – a month to memorise

May was one of the most interesting months of this year. May 10th: Won 2nd Prize in TECH QUIZ during NIECEFEST 2010 and it was fun, challenging and well-organised.

May 13th: A memorable trip to Barachukki Falls. Not a lot of water and off-season! But had loads of fun with classmates :) Don’t forget to view the album

May 15th: A monumental day for me and my family. Received scholarship of Rs. 12,000/-  from Dr. V Prakash (CFTRI Director) as I was named the topper of 2nd year BE and topper of 4th Semester. My parents were moved to tears on this day with happiness. Was blessed to have such a family and too happy to have made them happy and feel proud. :) Check out the pic for that day

Other activities during April 2010

April 24th and 25th were 2 days when we had mock placements by Xenesis group for free on our campus. It was a first time experience going through the placement process. It was professionally handled. Got good marks in the process and was happy with the performance.

The fun side of it was that everyone had dressed up in formals for the first time in their life. Here’s a glimpse into the fun.

April 26th: TCS Tech BYTES conducted at JCE was fun! I got selected to the top 6 teams in Mysore and got 4th place overall. Got Fastrack goggles as a token of appreciation and I cherish them even to this day! Another proud day for me :)

In just four days, on April 27th, had been to an excellent trip to Chunchunkatte with a few seniors and juniors who were part of techNIEks volunteers’ club! Had an amazing time at Chunchunkatte despite there being very little water :D It was just a splendid ride of 60km. Enjoy with us some of the action here.

April 28,29,30th A gruelling 3 day workshop from IBM on DB2. Finally passed it and was IBM Certified Database Associate.

techNIEks 2010

Finally I organised 2 events for the first time in my life as part of techNIEks 2010, annual college fest of the National Institute of Engineering. Organised “TECH Quiz” and “Ten Twists”, a treasure hunt within campus over a span of 3 days. Was a bit nervous, did not know how to handle tough situations. But it was fun and challenging! techNIEks rocked Mysore from 8th April to 10th April and it was one hell of a learning experience! Also volunteered for the cultural committee and Cyclothon during techNIEks. This was the turning point in my life and techNIEks 2010 added a whole new dimension to my usual monotonous, uninteresting life.

Check out techNIEks 2010 from my camera!

GATE score

March 15th. The GATE results went public. AIR: 591. Percentile: 99.44 for CS The first thing i received that day was scolding from my dad about not putting enough effort and  messing it up. Everyone else praised me for the rank that i had scored. I took the former to my heart. Made a resolution to work hard and get a good rank in GATE 2011. A simple short and sweet day marked with joy and happiness :)

March 25th. My very own birthday. Had a treat at Ruchi The Prince with some of my closest friends ever. Made each and everyone feel special. Was happy :)

Oops! Long time no see! :D no more excuses from now on! I promise!

It’s been 9 full months since my last post! A full term pregnancy? :P Many things have happened since I wrote GATE. I’ll summarise each of them in separate posts! Finally, my brain child emerges at this stage. I’ll reveal it all: how it was conceived, developed, nurtured, incubated and delivered :)
